Peter Tonge obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry at the University of Birmingham and then moved to the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in 1986 as a NATO-SERC postdoctoral fellow. After spells at NRC as a Research Associate and a Research Officer, followed by an appointment as a Staff Investigator at The Picower Institute for Medical Research, he joined the faculty at Stony Brook University in 1996 where he is currently a full Professor in the Department of Chemistry. He is also a Professor in the Department of Radiology (by courtesy) and Associate Editor for the American Chemical Society journal ACS Infectious Diseases.
Peter Tonge is currently the Director of the Center for Advanced Study of Drug Action, Co-Director of the NIH-funded Chemical Biology Training Program and Cluster Lead of the Biomolecular Imaging Cluster. He is also the co-founder of Chronus Pharmaceuticals Inc which is creating superior disease diagnostics and drug candidates with improved efficacy by exploiting deep knowledge of metabolic pathways, focused metabolite detection, and slow-binding drug:target kinetics.
